Liars Club Flier

The Liar's Club

an evening of original performance pieces based on outrageous lies

April 27 - June 2
Fridays and Saturdays @ 8pm

Legendary theater director Scott Kelman's last developed piece, The Liar's Club, opens Friday, April 27th at the Brooklyn Bay Performance Space.

Brooklyn Bay's performers spin FIVE outrageous lies, lies that transport and enthrall while gradually revealing the hidden truth alive at the center of each one.

First performed to rave reviews in LA in 1984, this new version revives two old favorites, including Kelman's own "Magic", as well as three new, never performed pieces. Directed by Kelman and Melanya Hélène, co-founders of the Brooklyn Bay Performance Space, The Liar's Club springs from the same "kelmanworks" process of body awareness and mindfulness that recently generated the deliciously satisfying Tao Soup.

Kelman passed away in Portland on February 22nd. He was the founder of the original Off-Off-Broadway Association in New York and a force of creative nature in the 1980s-1990s Los Angeles theater scene, founding Pipeline, Inc., the organization behind 3 theaters (The Factory Place Theater, The Boyd Street Theater and the Wallenboyd) and 300 productions. He has received the L.A. Weekly's Margaret Hartford Award and Special Career Achievement Award. He moved to Portland in the early nineties where he continued to perfect and teach his utterly original, homegrown creative discovery process, "kelmanworks."

Melanya Hélène, a Naropa Institute graduate, creator of the weekly children's series Play after Play, and Scott's collaborator on Tao Soup, and now The Brooklyn Bay's artistic director, took over directing The Liar's Club a few weeks before Scott's death and is now bringing his last work to completion. Performers include Frank Engle, Melanie Harmon, Matt Haynes, Rachel Heichen and Marc Otto.
